Associate Chaplain
Posted: 03/29/2026UPMC Northwest is excited to introduce a Chaplain role to the hospital, offering a meaningful opportunity to help build and shape spiritual care services for our patients, families, and staff. The Chaplain will provide compassionate, inclusive support and play a key part in creating a comforting and healing environment for those we serve.
Responsibilities- Provide timely spiritual care visits to patients and families based on daily assignments and identified needs.
- Communicate the spiritual care services available within the hospital and guide individuals in accessing support.
- Assess and screen the spiritual or emotional needs of patients, families, and staff, offering direct support or coordinating additional resources when appropriate.
- Participate in on‑call coverage as needed.
- Plan and support occasional liturgical, spiritual, or seasonal observances in collaboration with hospital leadership.
- Contact a patient’s personal clergy or faith representative upon request and assist in coordinating visits.
- Document patient interactions according to hospital and departmental standards.
- Set annual goals with the director and meet periodically to review progress and growth.
- Complete continuing education activities aligned with department expectations and personal development goals.
- Assist hospital leadership with administrative tasks related to spiritual care.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience- Bachelor’s degree required; major in Pastoral Ministry, Divinity, Theology, or a related field.
- Completion of at least one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) preferred, ideally within the last 1–2 years.
- Minimum of one year of hospital or healthcare-related experience preferred.
Personal & Professional Requirements
- Endorsement from a recognized ecclesial body (church or denominational authority).
- Ability to provide spiritual support to individuals with a wide range of physical or emotional challenges.
- Commitment to a collaborative, team‑oriented approach to ministry within the hospital setting.
- Proficiency with personal computers and standard software applications.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
- Act 34 Clearance (Criminal Background Check)
