  • We often hear about what a great place Franklin is to retire or raise a family, but it’s also a great place to run a business. Our downtown offers a full slate of independently owned retail stores and restaurants that make our town special.

Suzanne Hartwig and her son Lucas own one of each - Suzanne’s Restaurant and Boutique at 1134 Liberty Street, and Divine Designs interior design and gift boutique at 1252 Liberty Street.

Previously, Lucas operated a small cafe in Seneca called Operation Culinaire and Suzanne had an Interior design studio and gift shop in Clarion, but they wanted to find a location that would serve both of their businesses and allow them to work more closely together.

After looking at a couple other locations, they came to Franklin and walked around. They had already heard Franklin was “eventful” and were struck by the beautiful architecture and layout of the town.

“It is such a beautiful town with so much going on,” Suzanne said.

They wanted to find a historic home where they could create a truly unique atmosphere.

“We loved the idea of being in the Victorian city and creating a feel for the restaurant in keeping with the town,” Suzanne said.

They were given a guided tour by a realtor and the Franklin Area Chamber director who helped them find their ideal location close to the parks in downtown. Their spot is ideal for welcoming guests during Franklin’s many outdoor concerts and festivals.

The concerts, theatre, music museum, all the festivals, bike trail and river activities are all a bonus for having a business in Franklin, Suzanne said.

They are currently in their fourth year at the original restaurant and boutique location, and expanded to open the second boutique location two years ago.

The Hartwigs have become an integral part of the downtown business district, and are a great example of how a business can capitalize on all of the events, attractions, and opportunities that make Franklin an advantageous location for a business.
“Franklin is also a beautifully maintained town with such visual appeal. Being huge fans of historical preservation, we are happy to be calling Franklin home for our business and hopefully someday as a residence as well,” Suzanne said.
